ESG in Focus: Interview with Claudio Schiavoni, member of the Board of Directors

Michela: Good morning, Claudio. In recent years, IMESA has embarked on a concrete path toward sustainability and social responsibility, integrating ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles into its corporate strategy. To guide and oversee this journey, the ESG Committee was established, but the Board of Directors also plays a key role through your leadership. How did this awareness arise within the Board, and how important was it to prepare the first Sustainability Report to ensure transparency with stakeholders and clients?

Claudio: The company has always been attentive to ESG issues, even if in the past it was in a more “hands-on” way. We have made concrete choices, such as installing the photovoltaic system on our roof, which allowed us to reduce our environmental impact, as well as numerous sponsorships and donations to local social organizations. These are actions that perhaps were not labeled as ESG at the time, but they fully embodied its spirit.

Then, in June 2023, we decided to take a further step forward: to give a more structured framework to this commitment by preparing our first Sustainability Report. This was an important moment because it allowed us to transparently communicate not only what we do but also the direction we want to take. With this document, we aim to show clients, suppliers, and banks that IMESA is not only a business-focused company but also one that concretely integrates ESG principles into its growth strategies.

Michela: In terms of environmental impact, how can IMESA’s products support the energy transition and greater sustainability in the electrical sector?

Claudio: IMESA’s environmental commitment is not something new; it is a path that began years ago when we decided to install the photovoltaic system on the roof of our headquarters. This choice allowed us not only to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact but also to send a concrete signal of consistency between what we produce and what we practice. Another key step was the decision to completely eliminate SF6 from our switchgear, a high-impact greenhouse gas.

As a company operating in electrical panel production, we feel responsible for actively contributing to the energy transition. Our products are an integral part of the infrastructures that manage and distribute energy safely and efficiently. This means that every innovation we bring to our systems can have a positive impact across the entire supply chain, from industry to communities.

Michela: Looking to the future, how do you see the evolution of ESG governance within the company?

Claudio: To be honest, IMESA is currently very focused on the social side. In the past, perhaps, the well-being of employees was not as important as it is now. Today, in fact, we put people at the center, and we will continue to do so. We are convinced that supporting the community and our employees is fundamental. An employee who has fewer problems works better. That is why we have made an effort to understand real needs, also through a questionnaire, in order to launch concrete initiatives in support of families.

Michela: IMESA considers people the heart of the company. Concrete initiatives have been introduced for employee well-being: flexible working hours, based on an internal survey; training on health, nutrition, and addiction prevention; safe driving courses; and workplace safety programs. How do these projects strengthen corporate culture and employees’ sense of belonging?

Claudio: I want to emphasize that these initiatives are not born with the goal of strengthening the sense of belonging, but because they represent a true value for us. At IMESA, we deeply believe in the well-being of our employees and their quality of life, both inside and outside the company. We know that families often face significant expenses, especially for children, and we want to offer concrete support.

Every project is designed to respond to real needs. In particular, we want to support those who choose to have children or expand their families because we consider parenthood a fundamental value. To do this in the best way, we have made an effort to understand our employees’ needs through a questionnaire in order to launch concrete initiatives in support of families.

Moreover, when an employee feels listened to, supported, and at ease, they live better and bring more energy, motivation, and attention to their daily work. This naturally contributes to strengthening corporate culture: it creates an environment where people feel part of a community that cares for them, values their time, and prioritizes their well-being. When employees perceive that the company truly cares about them, their sense of belonging and pride in being part of IMESA also grows.

Michela: How important is it for IMESA to be a reference point for the territory and for the industry?

Claudio: It is fundamental. I firmly believe that a company is not only defined by its products or revenue but also by its impact on people and the territory where it operates. Growth generates jobs, well-being, and, in a medium-sized city like Jesi, it means being able to reinvest concretely in the local community. We want a company that grows, generates income, and, at the same time, brings value to the community. Innovating, creating employment, supporting local projects—these are all actions that are part of our vision of corporate responsibility.

My family has always felt a strong connection with the community: we have committed to being close to the needs of the territory, particularly young people, supporting initiatives capable of generating real and lasting benefits. We believe that a company’s success cannot be separated from social responsibility and giving back at least part of what it receives from the environment in which it is rooted.

Michela: Thank you, Claudio, for sharing your vision. It is clear that IMESA aims not only for industrial excellence but also to create value for people and the territory.
